Daily Workshop Log #4

A slightly smaller update today compared to my previous Daily Workshop Logs.

I’ve had a busy day at work, followed by a rather unsettled baby for most of the evening. Despite that, I still wanted to make at least one small piece of progress on The Inventor.

Today I used Aseprite—which I’m really starting to enjoy—to build a basic sprite sheet for the player’s UI. These sprites will form the beginnings of the inventory system, allowing the player to pick up and store resources. That’s the extent of Prototype 002 for today, but every system has to start somewhere.

Like most of my early assets, they’re simple and there’s plenty of room for improvement. For now, though, I have the beginnings of a UI background, inventory slot, selected inventory slot and close button.

Alongside the artwork, I’ve also started watching tutorials on UI and inventory systems in Godot. It might seem like an unusual next step, but these systems will be fundamental to the final version of The Inventor, so I want to begin learning and practising them as early as possible. I’ve found DevWorm’s UI and inventory tutorials particularly helpful, and I’m planning to watch a few more this evening.

That’s all for today’s progress.

This project will always be built around a full-time job, family life, and everything else that comes with it. Some days will bring big milestones, while others will be about taking one small step forward. Both are worth celebrating, because every step gets me a little closer to bringing The Inventor to life.

Until the next log,

Steve
